Supporting research

Research support covers a wide range of activities from the earliest stages of having an idea for a research project to reporting research outcomes on systems such as ResearchFish and Pure and for the Research Excellence Framework.

Here I intend to post information  and advice relevant to research administration and management.

Association of Research Managers and Administrators (ARMA) – I’ve found ARMA a useful resource since joining in January this year and I’ve attended one workshop, enrolled (and started) on a Certificate of Research Administration. The many Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are useful too and members are given the opportunity to sign up to the mailing lists when they join. Individual membership for year is around £84.

Interdisciplinary research – where two or more disciplines collaborate to answer an overarching research question(s) is becoming increasingly important, not less as it allows more opportunities. Cardiff University has some advice on how to facilitate IR.

Abigail Saffer from the University of Manchester is developing a site for staff working in research support. It will be an information sharing/knowledge transfer resource, independent from other networks such as ARMA.

Priius is a web platform where members of the research community and support staff can find other for collaborations and knowledge sharing

– widen funding opportunities
– find researchers working in similar fields

Based at the University of Warwick, it is free to those working at academic institutions. Join at https://www.piirus.com/?action=join

The Research Whisperer regularly has articles relevant to the research management/administration profession.  It is a blog site and contains categories including ‘applying for funding’, ‘research communication’ and ‘networking’. It contain some interesting posts, while maintaining a sense of humour.
